Future Formula 1 Racer Posted: 26 Jan 2011 10:49 PM PST Could this be the future of Formula 1 racing cars? Former Renault engineering head Pat Symonds thinks so. With the slew of rule changes for the current F1 racers aimed at efficiency, we could be looking at these when racing begins in 2020. The FIA required 35% fuel reduction for the 2013 cars so they’re bringing back the turbochargers in place of the naturally-aspirated engines today. The 2020 cars, on the other hand, will consume even less fuel but will be more powerful, thanks to a hybrid-drive system and the return of the KERS. Bodywork could be modified on the fly too and gone will be the massive airbox on top of the driver’s head. Cameras should be enhanced too and will be able to beam 3D images. Share This |
